This Day 03:08
This Day On the porches they were watching In the street a cat and a car TV noises float around in the air They approached the intersection then they stopped and then they ran across and nothing happened after that for a while This day suspended in time Late afternoon and the sun is shining. On the porches they were vacant watching dust settle all around all around and each one of them thought of what she would wear And it darker and it grew more light and it’s gonna blot out a vacant light and each one of them decided what she would wear This night might be something unkind But on my porch I don’t seem to mind This night might be something unkind But on my porch I don’t seem to mind

Garthuson 02:16
GARTHUSON (Andy Meyers/ Allowed Sound Music) Garth Hudson is so cool He never even blinks and when he is out front just close his eyes and thinks and when he gets behind sure blows up a storm Garth Hudson is so cool? you ain’t even warm Garth Hudson is so cool he’s an organist bag of tricks and all the others drool when he supplies the missing licks the sounds he makes with his own hands no tapes could recreate.
And I was born to love him yes I know this was my fate Garth Hudson walks. Garth Hudson sometimes even talks when everyone goes quiet his musical bag of tricks he unlocks Garth Hudson sometimes smiles and he’s been known to cry but when he lives his life offstage he’s just like you and I Garth Hudson is so cool He never even blinks and when he is out front he don’t play nothing that stinks and when he gets behind blow hotter all the time Garth Hudson is so cool and I’m so glad he’s mine Garth Hudson

Little Johnny Jewel

about

“In the last week of High School, I hand wrote a sign. In bold and shaky print, I issued a series of challenges—“Are you tired of being in bands that aren’t doing anything different? Do you want to hear something new?”

In the summer of 1976, Andy Meyers wrote this ad, Ken Badger responded, and The Scenics were launched. From day one they shared an uncanny musical connection as they stepped into the new musical landscape opened up by artists like Patti Smith and Pere Ubu, the Velvet Underground and Roxy Music.

NEW PART IN TOWN is Protopunk at it’s most sizzling-- the intricate interplay of Television meets the surging urgency of the New York Dolls. It is nascent Scenics, recorded with drummer Mike Cusheon 4 months after Ken and Andy met. It includes 9 Scenics originals (6 by Badger, 3 from Meyers), 7 of which have not been previously released in any version. It also includes a 9 minute take on Little Johnny Jewel.

This album is first in a series of ‘SCENICS ANNUAL’ LPs covering each year of their original run, drawn from the Scenics 300 hour tape archive. Coming in Spring 2025: A YOUNGER VERSION featuring unreleased unreleased studio, live, and basement tracks from 1977.

On CD (with an 1800 word essay) and digital through Dream Tower Records. DT13.
Release Date 05/07/24. Digital pre-order 04/11/24

about

Dream Tower Records Toronto, Ontario

Vintage/current music by Toronto protopunk legends The Scenics & related projects.

“It wasn't so much that The Scenics were ahead of their time in 1977, it's more that almost everybody else didn't even know what time it was.
New York had Talking Heads, and England was blessed with XTC, but here was their equal in Toronto...”
