about

Andy Meyers: In 50 years of songwriting, I'd guess I’ve written 7 songs about specific musicians. Two of them are on this album. I used the title Garthuson because referencing The Band’s organist by name was too much in “Year Zero” of punk. I was still finding my footing in this new world, didn’t want to bring the old one in that directly. Plus, The Scenics had a tendency to deconstruct. The riff we play in unison at the end was lifted from the beginning of Garth’s Stage Fright solo.

lyrics

GARTHUSON (Andy Meyers/ Allowed Sound Music)

Garth Hudson is so cool
He never even blinks
and when he is out front
just close his eyes and thinks
and when he gets behind
sure blows up a storm
Garth Hudson is so cool?
you ain’t even warm

Garth Hudson is so cool
he’s an organist bag of tricks
and all the others drool when he
supplies the missing licks
the sounds he makes with his own hands
no tapes could recreate.
And I was born to love him
yes I know this was my fate

Garth Hudson walks.
Garth Hudson sometimes even talks
when everyone goes quiet his musical bag of tricks he unlocks
Garth Hudson sometimes smiles
and he’s been known to cry
but when he lives his life offstage
he’s just like you and I

Garth Hudson is so cool
He never even blinks
and when he is out front
he don’t play nothing that stinks
and when he gets behind
blow hotter all the time
Garth Hudson is so cool and
I’m so glad he’s mine
Garth Hudson

about

Dream Tower Records Toronto, Ontario

Vintage/current music by Toronto protopunk legends The Scenics & related projects.

“It wasn't so much that The Scenics were ahead of their time in 1977, it's more that almost everybody else didn't even know what time it was.
New York had Talking Heads, and England was blessed with XTC, but here was their equal in Toronto...”
