about

Ken Badger: ‘Oh Charlotte‘ From 1972 when I was in University in East Lansing and in a band playing the Velvets, the Who, Standells, Mott the Hoople (you had to be able to dance to it) & songs that I was writing. A teenage vignette that sought to describe a romance in the suburbs...a somewhat sleazy endeavour...the song & the situation it describes. White kids from the upper middle class suburbs around Detroit were aware of how privileged & decadent their lives were.

lyrics

Oh Charlotte! Ken Badger

Oh Charlotte put your coin in my slot
My liver is soaked and my hands got o’clock
You’re my subdivision lover in your new Corvette
I’ve tried for four months now and I’ll get you yet

We’ll park at our greasy gazebo baby
I’ll put my hand on you need
Give me all you got
Considering it’s a lot
And then we’ll oh Charlotte
Oh Charlotte you sure got a lot
My sweet Charlotte

Your daddy was a loser long before you were born
Now he owns a company and a great big shiny new Cadillac car
His eyes see little dollar signs with trees used to grow
Now is eyes they move more fast and his mind it moves more slow

Well next at our greasy gazebo baby
I think I’m going to twist your leg
Give me all you got
Considering it’s a lot
And then we’ll oh Charlotte
Oh Charlotte you sure got a lot
My sweet Charlotte

Your mama is a swinger she’s a party doll
She said son you better take good care of my little girl
Mama don’t you worry about your teenage girl
She was in good hands with Allstate she’s in better hands now

Will dance and prance to that heavy music
We’ll watch the hippies do their thing new
We’ll scrounge and lounge in our wormwood heaven
And then we’ll oh Charlotte
Oh Charlotte you sure got a lot
My sweet Charlotte

about

Dream Tower Records Toronto, Ontario

Vintage/current music by Toronto protopunk legends The Scenics & related projects.

“It wasn't so much that The Scenics were ahead of their time in 1977, it's more that almost everybody else didn't even know what time it was.
New York had Talking Heads, and England was blessed with XTC, but here was their equal in Toronto...”
